What’s
Kayak Polo?
Kayak Polo is
a team sport that is played in a kayak. The objective of this game is
to score in
the rival’s goal , and try to stop them scoring in yours.
The
equipment of the kayak polo players is
very simple.
You
need a paddle, a kayak and a
ball. Over your sport clothes you have to wear a cover, and a life
jacket . If you wear the cover right, water won’t be able to
get into the kayak. You have to wear a helmet too to protect you from
the blows.
Basic
things about a match.
-Every
match is played by two teams, and every team has 8 players. Five of
them will be playing on the pitch, and the other three will be
waiting outside,
to substitute one of the players. It’s very important that before one
of the players who’s outside enters the
pitch, the one who’s
inside goes out. If this doesn’t happen
this way and the new player
enters before the other one
has gone out, the team will be penalized and
will have to play with only four players for
2 minutes.
Teams
change ends at the half-time period. Each period
begins with a sprint in which each team is placed at
their goal line and the ball
is thrown in the middle of the pitch
by the referee. Then one player
from each team sprints for
the possession of the ball.
The
match is controlled by two referees (one at each side of the pitch)
that are usually right on the edge, out
of the water.
-Kayak
polo is played with a waterpolo ball
that the players pass around and can also be handled with the paddle.
You can also push a player
if he has the ball. When this happens, the player has to do an eskimo
roll to go out of the water.
A
player can only have the
possession of the ball for five seconds. Players can take the ball by
throwing it in the water in front of them.
